It was a weekend of rich tradition, pomp, and pageantry in the United Kingdom as 100 heads of state attended the coronation of King Charles III.

The king was crowned on Saturday by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, as 20 million Brits tuned in to watch on live television, according to official viewing figures.

Reactions to the coronation were mixed in Nigeria, a former British colony. Some people tuned in to celebrate with the British monarchy while others viewed the ceremony as a reminder of colonization and the looting of former British colonies.

It wasn’t only the coronation that Nigerians paid attention to over the last weekend.

We watched as the Golden Eaglets defeated South Africa in their final group match at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations to progress to the quarter-finals.

Eight hundred and thirty-four more Nigerians returned to the country from crisis-torn Sudan, and the tire of a Max Air plane became damaged as it was about to land at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja.
