India’s Kumbh Mela festival, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, has begun in Prayagraj, drawing tens of thousands of Hindus who seek absolution of their sins by immersing themselves in the freezing waters at the convergence of the sacred Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. 

The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Mudashiru Obasa as speaker. The lawmakers subsequently elected Mojisola Meranda, representative of Apapa I, as the new speaker. This comes amid allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement against the speaker. Meranda, who took her oath of office immediately, would serve as the first female speaker of the Lagos legislature. 52-year-old Obasa has been speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015.
