Wike Querries VC Over University Shooting
By Ufuoma Egbamuno
Governor of Rivers Nyesom Wike has demanded for answers within twenty four hours from the Vice of Chancellor (VC) of the Rivers State University, Professor Blessing Didia. This follows the death of a final year student of the institution on Monday.
Student Union Government (SUG) President Elvis Osima-Gogo confirmed to correspondent Emmanuel Onwuka that the final year student was shot at about 4pm on Monday. The student was rushed to the university clinic from where he was taken to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital where he died.
Our correspondent reports that activities at the school continued on Tuesday despite the incident as students were seen writing exams even as more shootings were heard at about 11 am. This caused panic as students scampered for safety.
However, a source confirmed to our correspondent that the shooting was carried out by policement in an attempt to restore order to the area.
In a related development, Governor Wike also querried the VC "over recent rampant complaints of 'sorting' within the university system."
A statement by the Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakudu says the VC has the next twenty four hours to respond to the governor's query.
