VISA on Arrival: NIIA Hails Buhari
The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) has applauded President Mohammad Buhari following the announcement that any African visiting Nigeria will be able to get a visa on arrival.
NIIA's Senior Research Fellow and Head; Division of Area Country Studies, Research and Studies Department, Dr. Olusegun Bolarinwa said the development will help reduce difficulties African countries encounter in trade and investment.
Speaking in an interview with correspondent Ijeoma Esek, Bolarinwa appealed to other African leaders to emulate Nigeria in a bid to achieve a borderless continent.
According to him, it will also improve regional integration and infrastructural development.
“In the past few years, it has become interactive for African countries to improve on what we call regional integration and infrastructural development in Africa.”
“If intra-African trade develops, it means there will be development in Africa, it means there will be job creation for Africans, and it means African countries will develop simultaneously.”
Furthermore, Bolarinwa while noting that total cancellation of visa within Africa will enhance, encourage and facilitate intra-African trade aimed at creating jobs, he added that Nigeria will have to reverse the order if there is no reciprocity from other African countries.
President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier on Thursday announced that Nigeria will from January 2020 commence issuance of visas at the point of entry into the country to anyone with an African passport. He revealed this at the ASWAN Forum in Egypt.
