Van Dijk, Messi Win Big At Uefa Awards
And so, the wait is over.
Liverpool and Netherland International Virgil van Dijk has been named Uefa Men’s Player of the Year. The defender who helped Liverpool secure the champions league title last season saw off competition from Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
Van Dijk was also named Uefa Men’s Defender of the Year.
Allison Becker was named Uefa Goalkeeper of the season.
Lionel Messi was named Uefa Forward of the Year. The Barcelona forward scored 13 goals in the competition last season.
Former Ajax now Barcelona midfielder Frankie De Jong was also named Uefa Midfielder of the Year.
Lucy Bronze won the Uefa Women's Player of the Year. The England International helped The Three Lionesses reach the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup in France in the summer. She also won the Uefa Champions League with her club side Lyon, becoming the first English woman to win the award.
