Man City, Man United and Arsenal draw big ties

The draws for the next stage of both the Champions League and Europa League were made this afternoon in Switzerland.

Premier League leaders Manchester City have been drawn against fellow Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspurs. Pep Guardiola’s men who comfortably dispatched German side Schalke 10-2 on aggregate will face Mauricio Pochettino’s side who themselves saw off another German team Dortmund 4-0 on aggregate. It will be the first European meeting between these sides.

Fellow Premier League side Manchester United will face Spanish giants Barcelona. Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s men who came back from the dead to sensationally knock out PSG on away goals rule after a 3-3 aggregate score, have an uphill task as they will face Ernesto Velverde’s Barcelona side who have got a little lone missile in Lionel Messi- the Argentine has scored in two Champions League final victories over The Reds. Five-time champions Barcelona had eliminated French side Lyon 5-1 on aggregate. United have won three of the 11games between these two sides, drawing four and losing four.

Last season’s beaten finalists Liverpool will tackle Portuguese side FC Porto, who knocked out AS Roma 4-3 on aggregate. The Reds got to this stage after seeing off German heavyweight Bayern Munich 3-1 on aggregate. Both these sides met in the competition last season at the quarter-finals with Klopp’s men throuncing their opponents 5-0 on aggregate. Of the six meetings between these sides, Porto are yet to record a victory with three wins for Liverpool and three draws.

Ajax’s reward for knocking out defending champions Real Madrid 5-3 on aggregate is another stern test against Italian giants Juventus. The Turin side remarkably knocked out Atletico Madrid thanks to a sensational performance from Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo who popped up with a hattrick to see his side win the tie 3-2 on aggregate. The Dutch team are the first side from the Netherlands to reach this stage since PSV Eindhoven in 2006-07. Both sides have met 12 times with Ajax winning twice, Juventus six times and there have been four draws between them.

The quarter-final first leg ties will be played on 9th and 10th of April.

The semi-final draws were also made and it sees the winner of the Tottenham V Manchester City tie take on the winner of the Ajax V Juventus tie while the winner of the Barcelona V Manchester United tie will face Liverpool or FC Porto.

In the Europa League, Chelsea will face Slavia Prague in the quarter-finals after easily dispatching Dynamo Kiev 8-0 on aggregate while Arsenal who saw of French side Rennes 4-3 on aggregate will take on Napoli.

In the other quarter-final ties, its a Spanish affair as Villareal take on Valencia while Portuguese side Benfica will slug horns with German side Eintracht Frankfurt.

The first leg clash will take place on the 11th of April with the return legs the following week.
