Top-Class Winger A Priority: Emery
Arsenal manager Unai Emery says signing a top-class winger was a key objective for the club in the current transfer window.
Emery revealed this after the club completed the record signing of Ivory Coast International Nicholas Pepe from Lille.
“Signing a top-class winger has been one of our key objectives in this transfer window and I’m delighted he is joining”, Emery said.
“He will add pace, power and creativity, with the aim of bringing more goals to our team”, he added.
The Ivory Coast International has completed his move to the Emirates from Lille and says the French contingent at the club played a part in his decision.
Speaking to the club’s website after completing his move, Pepe said the idea of linking up with France International Alexandre Lacazette played a part in his decision to join the Gunners.
“When I knew I was coming to Arsenal, I immediately thought of the French guys who play here. Lacazette used to play for Lyon and so I have had the opportunity to play against him. It will be an honour to play alongside him”, Pepe disclosed.
He added, “I thought of (Mesut) Ozil, the world champions, (Alexandre) Lacazette, (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang and many more. Of course, these are the players who sprang to mind because I used to watch them when I was at Lille”.
The 24-year old who scored 22 goals for Lille last season becomes the club’s record signing in a deal worth around £72m.
