Governorship Elections Hold in Bayelsa and Kogi

The people of Kogi and Bayelsa State respectively, went to the polls on Saturday, November 16, to elect a new governor.

 

 

In the Bayelsa election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Monday, declared candidate of the APC the winner with 352,552 votes while his closest challenger, Douye Diri of the PDP polled 143,172 votes.

 

The results for the Kogi elections will be announced on Monday.

 

President Buhari Returns From Private Trip

President Muhammadu Buhari returned from a private visit to the United Kingdom two days ahead of schedule.

 

The President had been on a 15–day “private visit” in the United Kingdom since November 2. He was due to return on November 17.

 

 

While speaking to reporters on arrival, he said he intends to work harder and be accountable to Nigerians.

 

Super Eagles Soar But Olympic Eagles Dive

 

Two Nigeria male teams had contrasting fortunes during the weekend.

 

The men senior team, the Super eagles strengthened their bid to qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) by beating Lesotho 4-2 in an AFCON qualifier in Maseru on Sunday.

 

 

Meanwhile, Nigeria will have no representative in men football at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after the Olympic Eagles crashed out of the U-23 AFCON with a 0-0 draw to South Africa in Cairo on Friday.

 

The Olympic Eagles failed to make the semifinal by finishing third in Group B with four points from three matches. Only the Top 3 teams at the tournament will represent the continent at the Olympics next year.

 

 

President  Buhari Explains Disengagement of Staff

 

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday explained the recent sacking in the Presidency saying it was just a reorganization and shouldn’t be given political/ethnic undertones.

 

The Presidency earlier announced downsizing of its staff including the sacking of aides of Vice President Osinbajo

 

 

More Teams Secure Places at EURO 2020

 

Defending Champions Portugal and World Champions, France on Sunday secured their place at the UEFA European Football Championship in 2020.

 

The Group Qualifying stage which wrapped up over the weekend also saw Austria, Croatia, Germany, and Holland book their spot at next years finale.

 

16 teams have so far qualified for the 24-team tournament. The remaining eight spots will be determined by playoffs.
