The Super Eagles head coach talks down his team's chances

In an interview with CAF website, Head Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has intimated that he doesn’t think his side is among the favourites for the 2019 AFCON title in Egypt.

The former Gabon and Niger coach however believes his side can reach the semi-finals of the competition, lowering expectations ahead of the showpiece competition later this year.

“If we have good preparation in good conditions, Nigeria must aim for the semi-finals of AFCON 2019. We have a very young team that can do well”, said Rohr.

The German tactician last week released his 23-man list for the upcoming games against Seychelles and Egypt, surprisingly leaving out captain John Obi Mikel as well as Kelechi Iheanacho. Mikel, who has not played for the Super Eagles since their group stage exit at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and only recently joined English Championship side Middlesbrough has been in impressive form for his club and Rohr believes he has a future in the team despite recent omissions.

“He has arrived in Middlesbrough recently. He told me he was not ready and needs to work after his knee injury in China”, said Rohr on the subject. “He did not play all winter either. He was not ruled out for the AFCON but could not make the match in Asaba. We will see for the future”, added German, Rohr.

On Kelechi Iheanacho’s omission from the upcoming games, Gernot Rohr said, “Kelechi needs to play with his club. He also needs to take advantage of the international break to show his qualities to his new coach. I give him time but there is danger for the CAN for those who do not play regularly in their club.”

Former Bordeaux gaffer Rohr also touched on the issue of Victor Moses who retired from international football after the World Cup. “I was against his international retirement and if he changed his mind, he must tell me but I have no information about it. We’ll see”, said Rohr.

Nigeria take on Seychelles in their final group game and are top of their group with 10points from five matches and already through to the AFCON Finals holding in Egypt in the summer.
