Sowore Meets Bail Condition
By Dipo Omoware
Former presidential candidate and convener of #RevolutionNow Omoyele Sowore has met his bail condition.
This was made known by human rights lawyer and legal counsel to Sowore, Mr. Femi Falana who said his client and co-defendant Olawale Bakare should be released any time soon.
Mr Falana said this while asking for adjournment of the case on the grounds that the Department of State Service (DSS), in whose custody the defendants have been detained have continually denied them access to the defendants.
Sowore was arrested on August 3rd, 2019 after calling for a nationwide protest the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Federal High Court in Abuja subsequently granted the DSS the right to detention for a period of 45 days to enable the agency conclude its investigation of alleged treason and terrorism against the defendant.
On Friday 20 September, he was placed on a seven-count charge of treasonable felony and money laundering by the Nigerian government.
He was granted bail of N100m with two sureties in like sum by a Federal High Court in Abuja. Though his legal team criticised the bail terms as stringent and sought a variation, the court refused the variation for Sowore but varied the bail conditions for co-defendant Olawale Bakare to N20 million and one surety in like sum.
Mr Sowore’s trial has been adjourned till the 5th and 6th of December, 2019.
