The Senate has resolved to introduce the presentation of oversight reports in plenary to ensure accountability in government spending. President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, stated this on Monday while briefing journalists in Abuja.
He said such reports will afford lawmakers the opportunity to make inputs on the performance of government agencies where necessary.
“The implementation of the 2020 budget will depend largely on the revenue we are able to generate and collect. Therefore the optimum performance of the revenue-generating agencies will be critical here. We will hold a meeting with all the revenue-generating agencies, that is to tell them that we are here for them, we want to work for them.
The Senate President also stated that parliament will meet with revenue-generating agencies on a quarterly basis to track how revenues generated are spent.
“So that not only committee member knows what is happening in the ministry or sector that they supervise but every member of the Senate should be able to know. And where the entire Senate needs to take a position to improve performance, we will do so.”
Legislative activities will resume proper on Wednesday.
