Senate Confirms Justices for New Roles
The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has recommended the confirmation of Justices John Tsoho and Benedict Kanyip as Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and President of the National Industrial Court respectively.
The Committee led by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele confirmed the justices after a secret screening exercise at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
After the exercise, Senator Bamidele in a remark noted that no democracy can grow with a comprised judiciary, stressing the need for a special intervention fund to enable the Judiciary function effortlessly.
According to him, even “saints” would be misled in the current state of things.
“We are concerned about the welfare of our judges and the judiciary. It is time for Nigeria to show that we are serious and we understand the full and true meaning of independence of the judiciary.”
“Under the present set of circumstances, if we appoint saints from heaven assuming we are able to, to serve on our bench, only strength of character of the individual judge or justice that can prevent him from being corrupt”, lamented Bamidele.
The committee is expected to submit their report before the Senate on Tuesday in plenary.
