SAM AMADI TO BUHARI: FASHOLA FAILED; GET ANOTHER POWER MINISTER
By Dipo Omoware
Former Executive Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Dr. Sam Amadi has said that the Federal Government should look for another person different from the former minister, Babatunde Fashola to fix the power sector.
According to him, Fashola, the immediate former minister for Works, Power and Housing, Fashola did not succeed in the past four years in the power sector.
Speaking on 99.3 Nigeria Info FM Lagos’s Morning Crossfire with Wemimo Adewuni and Sheriff Quadry, the former NERC Chair said “I think he is a great guy, he has shown capacity in Lagos but I think on the power sector, he didn’t succeed.”
Dr Amadi gave reasons for his position. “There’s evidence” he said. “The REA (Rural Electrification Agency) got quite disoriented. They went about change picking networks and putting expensive power in areas where there is already a network instead of going to develop rural Nigeria where about 40% of Nigerian communities are not connected”
He also said that under Fashola, the regulator (NERC) was weaker and did not enforce its laws and hold power companies operating in the country accountable.
“If you have done four years and we didn’t see much improvement, whether you are good or not,” Dr. Sam continued, “If we didn’t get the result, they (the Federal Government) should look for another person.”
Dr Amadi was NERC Chairman and CEO between December 2010 and December 2015.
