Roma have had a poor run of lately

AS Roma have sacked coach Eusebio Di Francesco after the club failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League on wednesday.

The Italian side were beaten 3-1 by Porto despite taking a 2-1 advantage to Portugal for the second leg tie at the Estadio do Dragao, ultimately being knoched out 4-3 on aggregate.

In a statement to announce the sacking, it read “AS Roma can confirm head coach Eusebio Di Francesco has left the club with immediate effect. The club would like to thank Eusebio for his work during his time at #ASRoma and wish him success in the future.”

The 49 year old led the club to third in the league as well as a semi-final place in the Champions League in his first season at the club, overseeing one of the greatest comebacks in Europe when his side overturned a 4-1 first leg defeat against the mighty Barcelona to win 3-0 in the second leg.

After such somewhat lofty achievements in his first season, Di Francesco who joined the club in 2017 has had a difficult campaign this term. The club have struggled for form and are fifth in Serie A, they were knocked out of the Cup by Fiorentina and are now out of the Champions League.

Jim Pallotta, Club President said, “On behalf of myself and everyone at AS Roma, I’d like to thank Eusebio for his work and his commitment. Since returning to the club, Eusebio has always acted professionally and put the club’s need ahead of his own. We all wish him well for the future.”
