Rohr: Real Tournament Starts Now For Us

As the Super Eagles prepare to battle defending champions Cameroon in the second round of the on-going AFCON tournament in Egypt, Head coach Gernot Rohr says “the real tournament is starting for us” now.

Speaking ahead of the crucial game on Saturday, Rohr stressed that the tournament is very difficult for everyone hereon, looking at the fixtures for the second round.

“Of course for us also against a very good team (like Cameroon), we had six points in the group stage, they had only five, they scored only two goals like we scored, so (it) will be I think a very tough game.”

Noting the slight difference in the goals scored by the two teams, Rohr noted it could count for noting in the competition especially at this stage. “There’s a small difference in the score, and so we have to prepare it well, we did it today, (it was a) very good training session, yesterday also (wednesday), added Rohr.

With the Cameroonians only playing on Tuesday, the gaffer noted that could be advantageous to his side as they’ve had more time to prepare for the game. “We have this little advantage, they played yesterday and we played already three days before, so lets try to have (take) an advantage physically and also mentally because everybody wants to do very well now”.

Nigeria is playing Cameroon after suffering again an unpreceedented 2-0 loss to minnows Madagascar, reminiscent of their 2018 AFCON/World Cup campaign when they lost to South Africa and faced the Lions next. The German tactician was quick to jokingly draw attention to it.

“There is something similar, we lost against South Africa at home 0-2 and then it was Cameroon game (next), now we lost against Madagascar 2-0, its Cameroon next, so it can be a good omen, I hope so.”

“Everybody wants to do well especially after the disappointment against Madagascar, its true we changed the team, we wanted to play with some other players to keep them in the rythmn of the competition but now the best team has to start and to do the best to make Nigerians proud.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Saturday at the Alexandria Stadium, Alexandria at 5pm Nigerian time.
