Return of Toll Gates Bad Idea - Chido Onumah
By Olamide Fadoju
Nigerian journalist and rights activist, Chido Onumah has condemned the Federal Government's proposed return of toll gates, saying it is a bad idea.
Mr. Chido in an interview on Nigeria Info FM, Morning Crossfire said the idea of the toll gates is down to the government's effort to look for money.
“The government is trying to look for money. I think we have enough money in this country for our government to fix our roads and not border us with paying toll.
"But in Nigeria the way things happen in this country. I don’t support the idea, I think there are a lot of ways we can raise money".
He further said that a lot of roads across the country currently are death traps and that should be the priority of the government.
“I think the focus should be on how to fix our roads ensure that Nigerians are able to move from place to place”.
The Federal Government has taken steps to return toll plazas on federal roads according to Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.
Mr Fashola, said in October that though the government dismantled toll plazas in the past, there was no law abolishing tolls.
“Let me just clarify this impression about toll gates; there is no reason why we cannot toll; there is no reason".
