President Signs Bill to End Open Defecation

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law, the Executive Order 009 to end Open Defecation in Nigeria by the year 2025.
The order, which takes effect today, is tagged. Open Defecation-Free Nigeria by 2025 and Other Related Matters Order.
It arose from the ranking of Nigeria as the second amongst the nations with the highest number of people practicing open defecation estimated at over 46 million people.
Announcing this in a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, Femi Adesina said a secretariat to be known as “Clean Nigeria Campaign Secretariat”, will be establishment in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.
The Secretariat is to ensure that all public places including schools, hotels, fuel stations, places of worship, market places, hospitals and offices have accessible toilets and latrines within their premises.The Secretariat shall terminate when Nigeria is declared Open Defecation Free.
Also, the National Assembly and the State Houses of Assembly are to enact legislation on the practice of open defecation with appropriate sanctions and penalties.
