RCCG gets new General Overseer
Power changes hands or so it seems Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on Saturday as the General Overseer of the RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye appointed a new General Overseer (GO) for the church in Nigeria as he retires, ahead of his 75th birthday on 2 March.
This latest development is due to a new legal requirement guiding the operations of registered Churches, mosques and CSOs in the country. Founders of such organisations, accordingly, have a utmost period of twenty years to lead their organisations. Additionally, when they retire, they are not be required to hand over to their families.
The new general overseer, Pastor Joshua Obayemi is to be in full operations as Adeboye still remains the general overseer of the Church worldwide. He was appointed the new GO at the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving at Shimawa, in Ogun State. Previously, he was the former Special Assistant to the General Overseer (SATGO) on Finance, as NAN’s report confirmed.
Adeboye, who was born on March 2, 1942, in Ifewara, Osun State, joined the Church joined the RCCG in 1973, and began working to translate the sermons of its then Pastor and founder, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, from Yoruba into English.
He became the General Overseer of the church in 1981 doing it part-time after the demise of Papa Akindayomi. He finally gave up his university position to preach full-time.
His ascendance has made the Church grown phenomenally. At the moment, it is Nigeria’s biggest, with branches globally in about 190 countries, including more than 14,000 in Nigeria.
Adeboye once said that he would put a church within five minutes of every person on Earth.
