Our Cars Are Legitimately Made In Nigeria - Innoson
By Olamide Fadoju
Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) has described reports that it imports almost all of its car parts as “frivolous” and untrue.
General Manager, Sales, IVM, Obum Osigwe told Wemimo Adewuni and Sheriff Quadri on Nigeria Info FM programme, Morning Crossfire, that their cars are “manufactured” in Nigeria.
Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing limited is a Nigerian automobile and bus manufacturing company founded by Innocent Chukwuma, with a manufacturing plant in Nnewi, Anambra state.
According to Obum, although not all the components for the cars are locally produced, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and other relevant agencies can testify that their cars are manufactured in Nigeria.
“We are not saying that we make 100 percent of all the key components of our vehicles in Nigeria. Right now we are presently making 45 to 60 percent of our components in Nigeria. Our engines are not done in Nigeria but we are improving technologically.
“No vehicle company all around the world manufactures 100 percent of the items they use. Some are outsourced and I told you the local components involved in our vehicles are between 45 to 50 percent. Ask anybody if you have this percentage of locally produced component of the car, you are a vehicle manufacturer,” he said.
Furthermore, he applauded the government's policies that have encouraged patronage for locally produced cars including the zero duty on the importation of "knocked down parts" into Nigeria.
According to him, "The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has actually taken it upon itself to ensure patronage of locally manufactured vehicles. We have the Ministry of Justice calling us to say to us that we have been mandated to buy from you."
