NIGERIA DOMINATES AT AFRICA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team Nigeria won the Women's African Wrestling Championship for the third time in a row

It was a domineering performance from Team Nigeria at the 2019 African Senior Wrestling Championships in Hammamet, Tunisia as the team claimed a total of 9 medals in 10 categories- 5 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Odunayo Adekuoroye, 2017 world silver-medalist and back-to-back Commonwealth champion bagged the gold medal- her fifth African title- in the 57kg category after defeating her Cameroonian opponent Esoombe Tiako via pinfall, needing just 29seconds to do so. Odunayo 25, had previously defeated Jeannette Sambou of Senegal 4-0 via pinfall before going on to see off Algeria’s Chaimaa Aouissi 12-0 via technical superiority to reach the semis where she outclassed home favourite Gharssi Dorssaf 10-0.

Blessing Onyebuchi and Sunmisola Balogun also triumphed with gold medals in their respective categories with victories over their opponents. Blessing defeated Egypt’s Mona Ahmed in the 76kg category while Sunmisola saw off Yvette Zie of Burundi in their 65kg clash.

Hannah Reuben (72kg) and Aminat Adeniyi (62kg) both won Team Nigeria’s silver medals while Ifeoma Nwoye (59kg) and Rosemary Nweke (53kg) claimed bronze medals. Sadly, medal hopeful in the 55kg category Kolawole Esther, missed out on the opportunity of winning a medal after suffering a knee injury in training a day before the final. Also, Emmanuel Nworie (72kg) lost his African title in the Greco Roman event but still managed to pick a bronze medal after beating Maafi Lamjed of Tunisia 10-9 in their third place match.

In all, Team Nigeria won the Women’s Wrestling Championship- the third time in a row- after accumulating 195points ahead of Tunisia who finished with 177points in second place and Egypt in third with 160points.
