NERC Denies N1,800 Estimated Billing Reports

There is no truth to the recent claims online that the monthly electricity bill for unmetered residential consumers is N1, 800. This is according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Commissioner, Finance and Management Services, NERC, Rogers Shatti, made this clarification at a public hearing on Extraordinary Tariff Review Application in Ikeja on Wednesday.

Speaking to correspondent Ijeoma Esek, Shatti says Distribution Companies have been issued an ultimatum to provide meters for Nigerians by 2021.

According to him, the commission is trying to ensure that unmetered consumers pay the same bill as those metered.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer, Ikeja Electric, Anthony Youdeowei has described the new estimated billing cap as unrealistic.

For him, the fundamentals on which the privatization of the power sector was signed has changed, with exchange rate and custom duties a major challenge.
