Maradona Named Coach Of Gimnasia
One of football’s greats is back in management.
Diego Armando Maradona has been appointed manager of Argentine club side Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
The 58-year-old former Albiceleste captain takes charge until the end of the season.
After leaving his former role as coach of Mexican second division side Dorados de Sinaloa back in June following failure to gain promotion to the top flight, the 1986 World Cup winner takes charge of his sixth managerial job, his first in his country since 2010 when he led the national team to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.
In an Instagram post to announce his appointment, Maradona said: “Finally it’s now official. I am very happy to be the coach of Gimnasia.”
"I want to thank the President Gabriel Pellegrino for this opportunity and say to all the fans that we are going to work with our hearts and souls for El Lobo."
Gimnasia- nicknamed El Lobo- announced Maradona’s appointment in a statement saying: “Star of world football Diego Maradona has signed his name and is the new coach of Gimnasia.”
El Lobo are currently bottom of the Primera Division.
