MANCHESTER UNITED APPOINT SOLSKJAER AS PERMANENT MANAGER

The Norwegian who arrived the club in December on an interim basis, took over from Jose Mourinho who was sacked after a poor start to the season.

Ole Gunner  Solskjaer has been appointed as permanent manager of Manchester United on a three-year deal.

The Norwegian who arrived the club in December on an interim basis, took over from Jose Mourinho who was sacked after a poor start to the season.

The 46-year old former Manchester United striker has overseen a change in fortunes for the club since his arrival, leading the Red Devils from a sixth place league position in December to a top four spot, breaking a club record in the process as his side won their first six league games, a feat only managed by Sir Matt Busby (on five).

Solskjaer also guided United to a quarter-final spot in the Champions League where they will face Barcelona, overturning a 2-0 first leg deficit against PSG away from home, and also the quarter-finals of the FA Cup where they lost to Wolves after defeating Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the previous round.

“This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long term” said Solskjaer on his permanent appointment. “From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club. It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here. The last few months have been a fantastic experience”, he added.

“Since coming in as caretaker manager in December, the results Ole has delivered speak for themselves. More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club” said Ed Woodward, Executive vice-chairman of the club.

Solskjaer becomes United’s fourth permanent manager since 2013 following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, and boasts an impressive record as manager – Played 19 Won 14 Drawn 2 Lost 3 Scored 40 Conceeded 17 Win Percentage 73.7%.

But it is the sense of calm about United that the former Cardiff manager has brought to the club that has been equally impressive, after what was a turbulent time under Portuguese Mourinho. Disgruntled players like Pogba and Martial who fell out with Jose Mourinho, have rediscoverd their form and helped propel the team forward, turning what was a seemingly disastrous season into a promising one.

Solskjaer who was manager of Norwegian side Molde when he was appointed United manager on an interim basis has said that his deal with Molde has expired but the Old Trafford club is expected to make a “goodwill gesture payment” to the Norwegian club.
