Kogi Impeachment: Senate Minority Leader Condemns Action
By Dipo Omoware
The Minority Leader of the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has described the impeachment of Simon Achuba as Deputy Governor of Kogi state as illegal.
Mr Simon Achaba was impeached as deputy governor of Kogi on Friday by the state assembly shortly after it received the report of a panel set up to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against him.
Senator Abaribe in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja raised the alarm and noted that the impeachment is against the spirit of democracy.
The Abia South lawmaker also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to rise above party affiliations and intervene. He asked that the spirit and letter of the constitution be protected by the President if the authorities in Kogi State failed to do so.
He said the Chief Justice ought to have borrowed a leaf from the Imo State experience and shun any invitation to swear-in a new deputy governor in whatever guise.
He condemned Kogi Assembly for going ahead with Achuba's removal even when a panel set up by the State Chief Justice to investigate him returned a no-guilty verdict.
Earlier today, the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Nadir Ajana had sworn in Mr Edward David Onoja as the Deputy Governor of the state.
Mr David is the running mate of Governor Yahaya Bello in the upcoming November 16 election. He recently resigned as the Chief of staff to the Governor.
