Iran Reacts to Assassination of Military Leader By US

Iran has reacted to the assassination of the head of it's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC's) Quds Force, General Qassem Soleimani in a US raid on Friday, January 3.

 

General Qassem Soleimani, Iran's most powerful military commander was killed alongside six others in a raid ordered by US President Donald Trump at Baghdad's International airport.

 

In the aftermath of his assassination, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei while expressing sadness over the death of the General, promised: "severe revenge" on the "criminals" behind the attack.

 

 

He also declared A 3-day national mourning was also declared across the nation of Iran. 

 

Soleimani, 62-year old was killed barely 48 hours after several thousand protesters attacked the US embassy in the Iraqi capital in anger at US airstrikes that killed more than two dozen pro-Iran fighters at the weekend.

 

The White House in a statement on Friday says Soleimani was killed to "protect U.S. personnel abroad" and they believe he was "developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region."
