INEC Declares Kogi West Senatorial By-election Inconclusive
By Philip Nwelih
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has declared inconclusive, the by-election for the Kogi-West Senatorial District.
Announcing this on Sunday, INEC's Returning Officer, Professor Olayinde Lawal, said the difference between the two major contenders, was insufficient for an outright winner to emerge.
He said that APC's candidate, Smart Adeyemi scored eighty thousand, one hundred and eighteen voters as against the fifty-nine thousand, five hundred and forty-eight votes, polled by Dino Melaye of the PDP, leaving a difference of 20,570 ballots.
Professor Lawal explained that figure was lower than the 43,127 registered voters in the 53 polling units of Kogi-West Senatorial District.
He said INEC will meet later to fix a new date for a supplementary election in 53 polling centres, to enable the commission to determine the winner.
Kogi-West Senatorial by-election resulted from the annulment of Senator Dino Melaye's victory in the 2019 polls.
Meanwhile, Kogi State Police Commissioner, Hakeem Busari says ten suspects were arrested for various electoral offences during last Saturday's governorship election in the State.
Mr Busari also told journalists in Lokoja that three persons died during the governorship and Kogi-West Senatorial rerun elections.
He said the three persons died in Lokoja when armed thugs invaded Saint Luke's Primary School Poling Centre, in Adankolo, Lokoja.
The Kogi State Police Commissioner said the command was still collating details of the violence that occurred during the polls.
He urged politicians and their supporters to avoid acts capable of breaching public peace especially after the announcement of the governorship election result.
INEC will resume collation and announcement of the governorship election result at 9am today.
