Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Prof. Mamood Yakubu, has stressed the need for financial independence of electoral commissions in the country.
The Chairman said this while receiving a delegation from the States Independent Electoral Commission SIEC on Thursday in Abuja.
The INEC boss is quoted as saying “the independence of both electoral commissions cannot be guaranteed when there is no financial independence.”
Professor Yakubu also emphasized the need for states to borrow from the electoral acts to fashion out laws governing the conduct of local government elections in the country.
“We need leading laws for the conduct of local government elections in the country that draw to a considerable extent from the national electoral legal framework.
Speaking earlier, Chairman of the SIEC forum, Hon. Igbozurike Akomas, called for the review of the Memorandum of Understanding between SIEC and INEC. He commended INEC for the successful conduct of the 2019 general Elections.
