House of Reps to investigate Edo State House of Assembly crises
The House of Representatives has passed a resolution to investigate the crisis in the Edo state House of Assembly.
The motion followed a matter of urgent national importance by Professor Julius Ihonvbere and two others. Professor Ihonvbere while moving the motion called for the intervention of the House to address the fact the Edo state House of Assembly was not properly inaugurated.
The lawmaker drew attention of the House to the fact that nine members were secretly sworn in, thereby shutting out 15 others, who were further harassed by a local vigilante group.
Speaker of the House Femi Gbajabiamilla in his ruling on the matter said the ad-hoc committee, which should also see how the warring factions can be reconciled, gave the committee one week to report back to the House.
On the 17th of last month, the 7th Assembly of the state was inaugurated which saw Hon Frank Okiye elected as speaker and Hon Yekini Idiaye as deputy speaker- a move that has caused controversy and was described by the sponsors of the motion as "improper, clandestine and nocturnal."
