FEDERER MARCH... Swiss star on course for record title
Federer defeats Verdasco to reach quarter finals in Dubai championship
Roger Federer is on course to win his 100th ATP singles title after defeating Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in three sets to reach the quarter finals of the Dubai Tennis Championship.
It was the Swiss’ 50th win of the Dubai championship and keeps him on course for a record eighth Dubai title.
The 20-time grand slam winner will join the “100 club” if he wins the Dubai championship, and will only just be behind American Jimmy Connors who has 109 ATP titles.
With the win over Verdasco, Federer will next play Fucsovics who defeated Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.
In other results, there was a shock for top seed, Japanese Kei Nishikori who was dumped out by Hubert Hurkacz from Poland.
Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili defeated Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-7, (2-7), 6-4, 6-3 while Frenchman Gael Monfils swept aside Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
