FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN THREE EMBASSIES ABROAD
The Federal Government has shut down three of its embassies abroad and downsized another one due to insufficient funds.
Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister for Foreign Affairs said operations have been shut down in Sri Lanka, Czech Republic and the Republic of Serbia while the embassy in Ukraine has been drastically downsized.
According to Onyeama, insufficient funds was largely responsible for the ministry’s inability to maintain the embassies.
This comes following the absence of 80 of Nigeria’s embassies abroad for funding in the 2019 appropriation bill submitted by President Buhari to the National Assembly.
Onyeama stressed on the neccessity of the move to shut down the embassies which have been left in a bad state unbefitting of the nation’s status.
President Muhammadu Buhari had back in 2015 announced that a committee would be undertake a review of Nigerian foreign missions. This is in a bid to determine the essential ones and ensure that the appropriate standards and quality are maintained.
