Federal Character Commission Defends N2.9 Billion Budget

The Federal Character Commission defended its N2.9 billion budget before the House of Representatives Committee on Federal and Inter-Governmental Affairs today.
Acting Executive Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Abubakar Shinkafi represented by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr Mohammed Tukur, said that the commission’s 2020 budget stood at N2,995,152,781.00.
"For the year 2020, the fiscal budget of the Commission stands at N2.995,152,781.00 only.
"This amount is made up as follows: Under Personnel, the sum of N2,390,693,169.00 only is appropriated for this year.
"Under overhead, the sum of N372,635,538.00 only is appropriated for the year. Under Capital, N231,824,074.00 is appropriated for this year.’’
According to him, the proposed personnel cost is the estimate for the payment of salaries and allowances of the Executive Chairman, 37 Honourable members of the commission, Secretary to the Commission and 1,189 staff members.
Responding to the FCC, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee, Rep. Abubakar Yahaya Kusada said Commission needed to clarify its second mandate to the committee.
"We have to get a letter of invitation from you as committee members to such events so that we can properly assess what you are doing.
"Secondly, the committee will write to you to invite you and some of your directors to come and give the committee a brief of your second mandate.’’
The committee advised the FCC to concentrate on their priorities and merge some items on its budget.
