Nigeria’s hottest football sensation, Victor Osimhen has revealed he turned down deals from some of European’s biggest teams to join Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
Speaking exclusively on Game On with Femi and the Gang on Nigeria Info FM, the Super Eagles striker revealed how he come up with the decision to go to Germany after the FIFA U-17 World Cup despite speaking to former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
I spoke with Arsene Wenger on the phone and he told me how he wanted me to play,” Osimhen told lead anchor Buchi Onokala on the show.
“After the tournament, Arsenal wanted to sign me, they were desperate to have me. First team wasn’t promised at the time even when I complete 18.
“I sat down with my family, mostly my elder brother. We had the likes of so many European teams that you can think of – Barcelona, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Ajax, Anderlecht, Wolfsburg was there also; Spartak Moscow in Russia,” the Lille hotshot revealed.
But the lure of first team action as soon as he turned 18 was paramount for Osimhen.
He said: “I spoke to my brother and he gave me some candid advice and he said I think you should pick Wolfsburg because the coach wanted you so much than the rest.”
For the Super Eagles striker, he decided to “give” Wolfsburg “a shot” as according to his elder brother, the German side presented a better “project.”
Unfortunately, Osimhen could only manage fourteen appearances in two years at the side between 2017 and 2019 and crucially without a goal to show for it. However, Osimhen insists “Wolfsburg was a perfect choice.”
“Sometimes, what you imagine is not what you get. So it didn’t work out well and I was really sad it couldn’t work out well because I really had a point to prove but sometimes life is like this so you have to accept it,” Osimhen added
