DISABILITY ACT IN NIGERIA: THE WAY FORWARD
An estimated 25 million people are living with disability in Nigeria, and according to a research by the World Bank and World Health Organization in 2011, it was discovered that people living with disability make up at least 10% of the total population of every community. One of every six persons is said to be living with disability according to that study.
It goes without saying that people living with disability suffer discrimination and segregation throughout their lifetime and recently, January 23, 2019 precisely, President Muhammadu Buhari accented to the Disability Act of 2018- a bill that has seen passage by the last two National Assemblies but refusal by the last two presidents.
The Disability Act aims at reintegrating people living with disability back into the society.
On this week’s edition of Development Report, Femi (@FemiCoolfm) takes a look at the issues surrounding the Disability Act.
