By Samuel Victor Akpan
After sealing their progress to the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup, a member of the victorious Enugu Rangers team Ikechukwu Ibenegbu has backed his team to “go far” in the competition.
The Coal-city based outfit progressed at the expense of their Togolese opponents, Kara following a 1-0 win at home. A result that certainly brought relief to the midfielder.
“We are relieved. I don’t know how to describe it. It was a really tough game but we thank God that we picked the ticket.”
“I think we will go far in the tournament. The unity in the team is very perfect, that’s one thing that has been leading us”, said Ibenegbu.
Going into the must win game in Enugu, Rangers trailed from the first leg having lost 2-1 in Togo, a task the former Enyimba midfielder Ibenegbu described as “tough.”
He also revealed that the victory didn’t come without an element of doubt during the game as it was hard-fought.
“They gave us a really tough fight. At a time we started to doubt ourselves but at last we qualified for the group stages.”
“We prepared very well for this encounter because when we went to Togo, we knew they are a very good side. They gave us a really good fight.”
Chinansa Eziekwe was the hero on the night scoring the only goal of the game in the 18th minute to see Rangers qualify on away goal rule, after it ended 2-2 aggregate.
Ibenegbu, 33, and nicknamed “Mosquito”, also adds that the team is united and the players and management have a good team spirit.
The Flying Antelopes are joined by fellow NPFL side Enyimba International who also sealed progress thanks to a 2-1 away win in Nelspruit, South African side TS Galaxy. The Aba side qualified 4-1 on aggregate.
