BUHARI'S FIRST TERM AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THE SECOND TERM
There was much pomp and fanfare at the Eagle Square as President Muhammadu Buhari and the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo had a triumphal inauguration on Wednesday. The event had many dignitaries present and well-wishers were also on hand to bid the present administration another fruitful four year-term in Nigeria.
However, a few astute individuals are already thinking what this could mean for the ultimate good of mother Nigeria, as Nigerians must be brave and discerning enough to put in perspective what is known and seen about President Buhari’s conduct of governance. This is especially relevant now as Nigerians have a lot of expectations from President Buhari as he begins his second term in office.
In this regard, we must ask that beyond the claim to integrity and incorruptibility, can we really say that President Buhari ticks the right boxes to convince us that he is that Nigerian leader who we all expect to lead the country on the road to fulfilment of its potentials?
With the re-election of President Buhari, Nigerians have not only laid down the marker against misgovernance in the country, they have also signalled to their current and future leaders what they expect from them.
The Buhari administration is basically busy tackling security challenges, cleaning up rot in government and diversifying the economy. While some progress has been recorded in these areas, some Nigerians are saying that we cannot as yet realistically say this has been comprehensive and far reaching enough to launch Nigeria into the expected path to greatness.
