Buhari To INEC: Get Your Acts Right
By Philip Nwelih
President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission to live by its bidding and ensure that only candidates chosen by the electorates are declared as winners.
He gave the charge at the Presidential Villa Abuja earlier today during a private meeting with the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu and other top management staff of the commission, alongside the Inspector General of Police.
While stressing that democracy is about free will and that the will of the people must be allowed to prevail, President Buhari called on INEC to get its acts right. He said the commission should leave no room for underhand tricks or manipulation.
The President also said he was determined to give Nigeria an electoral system that meets with best practices anywhere in the world and charged the electoral umpire to stick to the rules of fair play and adherence to justice.
President Buhari told the Inspector General of Police that he wants nothing less than a scrupulous securing of the electoral process, without bias or favouritism.
In a related interview with State House Correspondents after the private meeting, the INEC Chairman and the Inspector General of Police, pledged to ensure professionalism and fair play in the discharge of their duties.
