BREAKING: Supreme Court Sacks Imo Governor
By Abayomi Akinbola
In just a space of eights, Imo State will have three governors. This is because the Supreme Court has sacked Emeka Ihedioha as governor of the state and declared, Hope Uzodinma, the candidate of the All Progressives Candidate (APC) as the winner of the 2019 election.
A seven-man panel of the apex court in a unanimous decision held that Ihedioha did not win the majority of votes cast at the March 9, 2019 governorship election.
In the Judgment delivered by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the court accordingly ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Ihedioha and issued a fresh Certificate of Return to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in grounds that he won the majority of lawful votes cast at the election.
The court held that the lower courts erred in law when it rejected evidence tendered before them to the extent that votes from 388 polling units were not credited to the APC and Hope Uzodinma.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Ihedioha as the winner of the election but Uzodinma challenged the outcome of the election at the highest court of the land
