It was a very hot afternoon Sunday in the city of Lagos but that didn’t deter fans of TV and football from coming out in numbers to watch an exciting game between actors and reality TV stars.

The stage was the Campos Mini Stadium, Igbosere Lagos Island, and the game, a novelty match between former housemates of Big Brother Nigeria and cast of popular TV drama series MTV Shuga Naija.

The game was organised by Irabor Okosun, convener of Join the Cast Initiative and host of TheMovieroadshow and TalkTV247 on 99.3 Nigeria Info to raise commemorate Worlds AIDs day with support from Lagos State AIDs Control Agency and DKT International.

“It was a really exciting putting all of this together”, Irabor said in an interview after the event.

“The idea for the match came after we interviewed some cast members of MTV Shuga on TalkTV247.

“I thought since the (TV) show addressed issues around the scourge that is HIV and AIDs and World AIDs Day was coming up, why don’t we do something that involves the community and that was it.”

Commenting on the attitude of people to voluntary counselling and testing on the day, Dr Momoh Osezuwa, Public Health Physician who works in the HIV and AIDS sector in Lagos State said it was quite encouraging.

“All the testing and counselling tables are always full. We have a good turnout and we expect that as the match is going on more people will come out.”

Voluntary Counselling and Testing Stand

“We even had one or two stars from the Big Brother Show, ex-big brother stars come to do their test and that has encouraged more people to come do their test. And we think that that is a very good thing. It is setting a good precedence.”

Speaking further on the match, the heath practitioner noted it ties into the theme of the World AIDs day which is “Strengthening the HIV response through Community”.

“This is a great community effort to ensure that people know their status and of course those who are actually positive get linked to care as soon as possible and of course that will help us curb the viral load.”

The football match kicked off at 4.15pm and both teams tried to outdo each other in halves of 20 minutes. It was goalless at the end of a first half that had so much drama with some Big Brother housemates barely making it past the first 5 minutes of the game out of exhaustion (cue @alexunusual) and some literally running away from the ball when it was passed to them. Both sides called out to their fans to come join the match and that added more colour to an already exciting evening.

Half time entertainment featured mini-games and quizzes for spectators to win prizes as well as a short lecture on the need for testing and counselling.

The second half proved to be more exciting as it provided two goals including a wonderful freekick goal by the MTV Shuga team. The Big Brother Naija team had a chance to reduce the deficit when the referee awarded them a penalty in the final minutes but they could not capitalise on their good fortune.

The match ended 2-0 in favour of the MTV Shuga cast.
