Ahmed Lawan Emerges New Senate President
The Progressives Governors Forum of the All Progressives Congress (APC) formally adopted Senator Ahmed Lawan as their preferred candidate to be the next Senate President and Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Chairman of the Forum, Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State, made the announcement on Monday, after a closed-door meeting of the governors. He told journalists after the meeting that the decision to adopt the lawmakers as their preferred candidates was unanimous.
Ahmed Lawan also won the leadership position of the ninth National Assembly on Tuesday. He defeated his opponent Ali-Ndume with 79 votes from the lawmakers, thereby making him the Senate President. He was immediately sworn-in by the clerk of the National Assembly.
His victory was announced by the clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori. Omo-Agege has also been reported to defeat Ekweremadu to emerge, Deputy Senate President.
