Five bodies have been recovered from Chokocho river in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers state.
Residents of the area claim the bodies were dumped in the river by gunmen suspected to members of a vigilante group, called ONELGA Security Planning and Advisory Committee, OSPAC. The vigilante group operates in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of the state.
There were reports over the weekend that OSPAC members attacked a bar in the vicinity and had killed two persons and kidnapped two others.
Tensions escalated today when the community youths discovered that more than four persons were killed. On Sunday, youths of Okomoko and Egwi communities protested for nine hours, disrupting business activities and movement of travellers heading to Imo, Abia and Enugu states.
Nigeria info’s Joshua Rodgers reports that residents fled Okomoko community this afternoon when security personnel moved into the area possibly out of fear of random arrest. The security operatives have since left the community.
