Who is responsible for ensuring students’ safety in schools?

A Nigerian mother after dropping her son off at school, discovered he never made it into the school premises. The boy was later found in the car of one of the teachers, raising serious questions about the school's accountability and supervision.

This inspired a conversation on Nigeria Info’s Sunny Side, on how schools can better account for students in their care.

An educator called into the show to share her perspective on the issue, arguing that some parents have become "nonchalant" about their responsibilities, shifting the entire burden of student safety onto schools.

“They would always say the school should be 100% accountable for a child and I don’t think that’s proper,” she said.

She held that some schools have existing protocols schools have to safeguard their students, such as morning roll calls and prompt communication with parents if a child is absent. She also suggested that if these procedures had been followed in the case of the missing boy, the situation could have been resolved more quickly and without the distress it caused.
