Human Rights Lawyer, Henry Ekine, has raised concern about upholding the rule of law and the importance of adhering to boundaries for the establishment of an equitable society.
Barrister Ekine strongly condemned police interference in tenancy disputes, stating that it is unlawful and illegal.
Speaking on Nigeria Info's Morning Crossfire, he argued that such involvement by the police constitutes a violation of substantive civil laws. Barrister Ekine explained that tenancy is a civil relationship between a landlord and tenant and the enforcement of any agreement between the parties is a civil matter to be handled by a civil court.
The Human Rights Lawyer's assertion comes as youths in Woji protest the death of a landlord in the community, while in police custody. The Police were said to have been invited by a tenant over a disagreement with the deceased landlord.
Barrister Ekine maintained that tenancy disputes do not amount to a criminal offence, adding that police involvement is only permissible in criminal cases.
