The Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Sydney Gbara, has appealed for peace in the party amid deepening political tension in the state between its members loyal to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Mr Gbara made the plea on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, stating that the governor is already fulfilling his part of the peace pact initiated by President Bola Tinubu.
President Tinubu had intervened in the conflict, urging the warring parties to embrace peace. This follows the planned impeachment of Governor Fubara and the defection of 27 state lawmakers from the PDP to the All-Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr Gbara also addressed the issue of leadership within the party in the state, which has been a point of contention among party members. According to him, the party's constitution automatically confers the leadership of the party of a state to the office of the state governor.
Emphasising the need for party members to maintain peace and civility in their expressions, the Rivers Publicity Secretary further urged everyone to move past a now retracted derogatory comment by Ikwerre Council Chairman Samuel Nwanosike, which was directed at Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the heat of the political crisis in the state.
