Rivers NLC Exposes Planned Protest Disguised as Labour Against Council Barricade

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State, Alex Agwanwor, says the union uncovered a plot to stage a demonstration under the guise of a labour protest against the police. This follows the continued barricade of the 23 council secretariats by the police, which has prevented local government workers from performing their duties.

The police, aiming to maintain law and order, blocked the entrance to the council secretariats, instructing all parties to maintain the status quo pending a court ruling. This action was taken after some Rivers youths protested at various local government councils, demanding that council chairmen whose tenures had expired vacate their offices. This follows the state governor’s directive for caretaker committees to take charge of the 23 local councils.

Speaking on Nigeria Info FM’s Morning Crossfire, Mr Agwanwor condemned any protest against the police disguised as labour action, describing such acts as criminal and calling for the arrest of those involved.

The Rivers NLC Chairman mentioned that the union has not yet decided on its next steps following the expiration of its ultimatum at midnight on Monday. He assured that union members and the public would be informed once a decision is reached.
