A member of the Rivers State local government flood committee and spokesperson for Abua/Odual local government area, ABOLGA, Dugo Pelini Obom, says measures are in place to tackle the 2023 floods, predicted by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NIMET in the state.

Obom made the statement on NigeriaInfo's MorningCrossfire.

Asked about the committee’s effort to address current flash flooding in parts of the state, due to heavy rainfall, Obom said the committee’s main focus is on natural floods capable of displacing residents and destroying farmlands and communities. However, the committee advises the local government chairmen on mitigating the cause as well as the impact of flash floods, he noted.

Obom also lamented human activities worsen the flood situation in some areas, as some areas in the Abua/Odual local government have been marked as potential points for flash floods.

He further suggested a massive urban renewal program and called for the demolition of buildings along water channels.
