The Director General of Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NHSA, Engineer Clement Onyeazo Nze says its delegation was not welcomed by the Rivers state government during a 2022 flood assessment visit to states in the South-South.
In an interview on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Nze decried the unresponsiveness of some state governments to early flood warnings and predictions.
Earlier, Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA issued a red alert about an impending flood in Rivers Bayelsa, Delta, and Lagos, states following an expected rise in sea levels.
Nze added that the role of the agency is mainly advisory while the responsibility for implementing action plans lies with the government.
He urged state governments to take timely measures ahead of the expected floods in June 2023, noting that last year’s flood claimed 365 lives leaving many homeless.
The NHSA DG also called for more funding for the agency to enable speedy delivery of its duties.
