Eteo Tanker Explosion: Root Cause and the Way Forward

An explosion happened in Eteo community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday, August 14, 2022, leaving some persons dead.

The incident was said to have happened after tankers carrying suspected illegally refined diesel were set on fire in a bush near the Trailer Park Junction, a business hub in the local government area.

Though the exact number of deaths is yet to be verified, environmentalist Fyneface Dumnamene has revealed that those who died were scooping the product of the tankers when the explosion occurred, a claim victims’ families have disputed.

Mr Dumnamene spoke to Enoh Ogbevire on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, where he alleged that security operatives had set the tankers on fire. He frowned at the indiscriminate destruction of illegally refined petroleum products, stating that there should be designated tank farms for seized products.

“If the security operative had not set ablaze that tanker, it would not have caused multiple deaths,” he said.
