A Chieftain of the All-Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State, Emeka Beke, asserts his position as the rightful Chairman of the party in the state. This claim emerges in light of the appointment of a state caretaker committee by the national leadership of the party.
During an interview on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Mr Beke argued that his legitimacy is secured in the party's constitution, which, he contends, does not provide for the establishment of a caretaker committee. He maintains that the formation of a caretaker committee violates the party's constitution.
Mr. Beke accused the national leadership of the party of deliberately weakening the party's structure in the state, allegedly due to its recent alignment with former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, a member of the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to him, the division within the party results from Wike's aspiration to exert influence over the APC and PDP in Rivers State.
Mr Beke further alleges that Wike’s aim to control the APC in Rivers State is to destabilise the administration of his successor, Governor Siminialayi Fubara.
