Medical doctor Valeria Ugwu has listed some factors that contribute to an unhealthy work environment and impact workers' mental health.

She was speaking on Nigeria Info’s Hello Port Harcourt about “Mental Health at Work," the theme for the 2024 World Mental Health Day. She mentioned discrimination, forming of cliques, poor working conditions and unavailable work tools, exposure to risk and hazards, physical, verbal or sexual harassment, and work stress.

“Now some people are overstressed, they are given unreasonable working hours which now make some of them deviate to using substance to be able to cope with the work pressure,” she added.

Dr Ugwu also offered possible solutions like the government providing policies that promote mental health, employers sending managers for training, and workers finding “better coping mechanisms.”
