The Acting Coordinator of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency,(RIWAMA) Prince Ohia, has stated waste disposal guidelines for various local governments in the state.
Mr. Ohia provided these guidelines during an interview on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire.
According to him, in accordance with the laws governing waste disposal, council chairmen are primarily responsible for waste evacuation in their respective local governments. However, the Rivers State Government, through the agency, has taken responsibility for funding waste evacuation in Port Harcourt City and Obi/Akpor local councils, considering them as key administrative centers in the state capital.
The RIWAMA boss stated that residents of PHALGA and Obi/Akpor should bring out their waste between the hours of 6 to 10 in the evening to allow waste disposal agents to evacuate it between 10 to 6 in the morning.
He emphasized that dumping waste outside these hours is illegal and constitutes a violation of the law, urging residents to use designated receptacles instead of indiscriminately dumping on medians.
Additionally, Mr. Ohia mentioned an upcoming Foreign Direct Investment of approximately four hundred million dollars aimed at converting waste into valuable resources and addressing other waste management challenges in the state.
